When should I fertilize St. Augustine in San Antonio?

Howdy, Ron here. St. Augustine is the most popular grass in San Antonio for good reason — it loves our heat and takes shade better than Bermuda. But feed it at the wrong time and you're just growing weeds and disease.

Rule of thumb: wait until the grass is fully green and actively growing, usually about three weeks after the last frost — mid-April for most of us. That first feeding wakes the lawn up for the season.

Feed again in early summer and once more in early fall. Skip fertilizing in the dead of summer heat or right before winter — you'll stress the grass or push tender growth that a freeze will burn.

Water it in, don't overdo the nitrogen, and mow high (3–4 inches) to shade the soil. That's most of the battle right there. When in doubt, Ron's crew can put your lawn on a program so you never have to guess.
